St. Gertrude Church: Staff Singer Auditions 2023–24Staff singers are expected to have thoroughly learned their music before coming to rehearsal; copies of scores are always given in advance. All staff singers absolutely must be present for Christmas Eve and Day, and the Roman Catholic Holy Week (substantial daily services from March 27–31, 2024). Other absences can be cleared in advance with the Director of Music, and staff singers are not responsible for finding their own substitutes.
About our Choirs
The Parish Choir provides music at the 10 a.m. Sunday mass except for the first weekend of each month, and is made up of approximately 20 volunteers, eight professional singers, and four high school choral scholars. They rehearse Thursdays from 7–9pm. Staff singers are paid $75/call for this.
The Schola Cantorum is unique in Cincinnati; the soprano line is sung by children ages 8–13, and the alto, tenor, and bass lines are covered by two professionals and one high school choral scholar per part. The ensemble provides music at the noon Sunday mass, except for the first weekend of each month. The ATB "back row" rehearses Thursdays from 6:30–7pm, and the children rehearse separately throughout the week. Staff singers are paid $100/week to be part of this ensemble.
The Capella is a professional choir of eight singers that provides music for some Sunday masses when the Parish Choir and Schola Cantorum are off, and at various daily masses on holy days throughout the year. They rehearse 90 minutes prior to the mass at which they sing. Participation in this is welcome, but not expected except on Christmas Eve and Day, and Holy Week. The fee for each mass is $100.
